Our client, a private real estate investment and management company is recruiting a hands-on controller. This role will report to the president and have oversight of one experienced bookkeeper. This is a hands-on position that requires previous experience and understanding of a real estate investment business. You will be an operational focused professional and partner with strategic leaders of the business to improve the delivery of the finance function.
Duties and Responsibilities
•Prepare and review of monthly, quarterly and year end financial statements
and reporting packages in accordance with statutory requirements.
•Review and submit statutory income tax filings including HST returns and
any cross border US tax work.
•Prepare financial forecasts, budgets, consolidation and reporting and
treasury duties.
•Develop short- and long-term financial objectives while providing timely
and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts to enhance financial performance.
•Prepare all financial and fiscal reports in tandem with the president,
including organizational revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, and other financial partners on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
•Coordinate and set up activities of independent auditors, ensuring all
audit issues are resolved, all compliance issues are met, and the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with GAAP
and federal, provincial, state and other required supplementary schedules
and information.
•Support the Executive Management team in developing and implementing the
organization's strategic plans.
•Support new business acquisitions by assisting the president in
identifying and analyzing new potential property acquisitions, new business opportunities, and people planning.
Required Skills and Abilities
•Knowledge of Real Estate accounting and cross border US Tax treatment.
•Strong working knowledge of Spectra or Yardi, database and
accounting/reporting systems and of general office software, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite.
•8-10 years + experience in a financial leadership role with management
experience of the day-to-day financial operations of a real estate – property business.
•Prior experience in Assurance and Tax from a firm a nice to have.
•Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and influence your
team/ business.
•Manage people and relationships at all levels of the organization.
