Our client, a leader in the development of multifamily projects in the Lower Mainland, is expanding their team to support their growing portfolio of development projects in the Metro Vancouver area. They seek a strong leader to help drive safety culture and core values. The ideal candidate will have a strong strategic vision, curiosity, a drive to learn. The desire to continually improve will be key characteristics for success in this role. Directing health, safety and environmental processes, procedures and initiatives to support the company in continuing to enhance the culture of safety.
 



Director of Health, Safety & Environment Duties & Responsibilities:
 
  • Provide leadership for the implementation, enforcement, and continuous improvement of company’s environmental, health, and safety policies and processes;
  • Plan, direct, and implement new corporate policies, procedures, and standards across all projects;
  • Communicate HSE progress, status, and issues to the entire organization; proactively build awareness of HSE through continuous communication strategies;
  • Track, administer and report HSE metrics and measurements to leadership;
  • Actively seek improved HSE practices through benchmarking and active participation in HSE related seminars and organizations.
  • Develop and implement programs to achieve injury free work sites. Drive accountability among all functions to eliminate accidents and injuries; manage programs to achieve a high degree of engagement and ownership at the employee level;
  • Develop and execute initiatives designed to identify, evaluate, prevent, and control environmental, health, and safety hazards across sites;
  • Develop and oversee execution of a comprehensive safety training program;
  • Oversee and maintain the Company’s successful COR Certified Designation
  • Develop and oversee safety rewards and recognition programs;
  • Develop and oversee a contractor safety program to ensure proper HSE practices by contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with all related regulations across all sites;
  • Act as the primary interface with regulatory agencies on HSE matters;
  • Conduct and document thorough accident, incident, and "near-miss" investigations, and provide recommendations for process, procedure or equipment improvements to reduce risk;
  • Ensure compliance with all WorksafeBC and other related regulatory requirements for documentation and reporting; conduct or oversee routine audits for all sites related to HSE activities;
  • Provide direction and guidance to Safety Leads across all locations; participate in the selection and performance management of these individuals;
  • Coach and mentor safety professionals and other key staff to achieve professional growth and improved business performance;
  • Provide leadership and direction for cross-functional safety committees at each site;
  • Provide direction and support to all site managers, project managers;
  • Build and maintain working relationships with trade contractors, consultants, sub trades, designers, and clients
  • Create and manage a working relationship with WorkSafe BC


Director of Health, Safety & Environment Qualifications: 
 
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of health and safety management experience within construction
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable safety legislation
  • Working knowledge of construction processes and terminology
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with ability to influence others in the creation of a strong safety culture
  • Able to deliver presentations on safety awareness/topics
  • Ability to manage difficult situations regarding site safety

The compensation range for this role is $145,000 to $170,000 annually, depending on candidate experience and qualifications.
